I still catch myself occasionally thinking in keyword terms first, five years of habit doesn't disappear because the algorithm changed. So this article is partly me working through the shift properly, not just reporting on it from a distance.
What Actually Changed, and When
This didn't happen suddenly in 2026. It's the continuation of a progression that's been running since Google's Hummingbird update in 2013, followed by RankBrain in 2015, BERT in 2019, and MUM in 2021, each one moving search further from matching exact strings toward matching meaning. What's different now is how far that progression has gone, and how directly it now determines both classic ranking and AI-citation eligibility at once.
One recent ranking-factor analysis puts content relevance, semantic coverage and topic comprehensiveness, as the single strongest ranking factor category at 92% importance, with entity signals, how clearly your content connects to recognized entities in the Knowledge Graph, at 78%, now ahead of backlinks as a factor category. Keywords still register at roughly 55%. Not irrelevant. Just no longer the thing doing the heaviest lifting.
What "Entity" Actually Means Here, Concretely
I think this term gets thrown around vaguely enough that it's worth being concrete. An entity is a specific, uniquely identifiable thing, a person, a company, a product, a place, a concept, that a search engine or AI system can recognize as distinct from every other similar thing, and connect to a web of related facts about it.
Which signal is most important for AI search citation?
I am an entity. Not "an SEO consultant" as a category, specifically me, Ilias Sami, connected to specific facts: years of experience, specific certifications, specific client outcomes, a specific LinkedIn profile, a specific body of published work. Keyword SEO would have me optimizing pages to rank for "white label SEO consultant." Entity SEO is building the actual web of verifiable facts and connections that lets Google and AI systems understand, with confidence, who I specifically am, independent of which exact phrase someone searches.
The NAP Consistency Problem, Extended to the Entity Level
Local SEO practitioners already understand a version of this from NAP consistency, Name, Address, Phone number needing to match exactly across every directory listing, because inconsistency introduces ambiguity a search engine can't resolve confidently. If a business is listed as one name at one address on the website and a slightly different name at a slightly different address on a directory, the algorithm loses confidence that it's looking at the same entity, and rankings suffer.
Entity SEO extends that exact same logic beyond local business listings to the entire web presence of a brand, a person, or a concept. Every place your entity appears, your own site, LinkedIn, industry directories, guest content, needs to describe it consistently enough that cross-referencing it doesn't introduce doubt. This is precisely the discipline I'm describing when I talk about entity debt, the visibility gap that builds up specifically because a brand has never been clearly, consistently established as a recognized entity, even while its keyword-based SEO looks perfectly healthy.
The Knowledge Graph Is the Actual Infrastructure Behind This
It's worth understanding what's actually doing the recognizing. Google's Knowledge Graph has grown enormously since its 2012 launch, different sources cite different current scale figures, ranging from hundreds of billions to over a trillion facts about billions of entities, and while the exact number shifts depending on which report you read, the direction is unambiguous: it's the structural database increasingly sitting underneath both classic search ranking and AI-generated answers. As one SEO researcher put it plainly, entity-based optimization isn't optional anymore, it's become the foundation everything else sits on top of.

Three Things That Actually Build Entity Signal (Not Just Definitions)
I don't want to leave this purely conceptual, so here's what actually moves the needle, based on what I do on every engagement.

Where Keyword Thinking Still Genuinely Matters
I don't want to overcorrect into pretending keywords are dead, because that's not accurate either, and it's exactly the kind of overstated claim I'd flag as noise in someone else's content. Keywords still matter for understanding actual search demand and language, what real people actually type or ask, and for structuring content so it addresses genuine intent rather than an abstract topic nobody's actually searching for. The shift isn't "stop thinking about keywords." It's "stop treating keyword matching as the primary signal," and start treating entity clarity as the foundation keywords get layered onto, not the other way around.
