The challenge
The business had a genuinely good reputation offline — years of word-of-mouth, a loyal customer base — but almost none of that translated online. The Google Business Profile was claimed but barely touched: no categories beyond the default, no posts, a handful of unanswered reviews, and photos that hadn't been updated in years. For the exact 'near me' searches that should have been easy wins, three competitors with objectively weaker reputations owned the map pack outright.
What made it harder
- The business operated across multiple service areas with inconsistent NAP (name/address/phone) data scattered across old directory listings from a previous rebrand
- No one on the team had bandwidth or expertise to run local SEO — it had been 'someone will get to it' for over two years
- Competitors in the map pack had significantly more reviews, meaning review velocity had to become a real priority, not an afterthought
- Service-area content didn't exist at all — the site had one generic 'services' page covering every location with no localisation
The approach
- Audited and rebuilt the Google Business Profile — correct categories, complete services list, business description written for both users and entity matching, and a posting cadence
- Ran a full NAP consistency sweep across every directory and citation source, correcting the old-rebrand data that was actively confusing Google's local index
- Built authoritative local citations on the sources that carry real weight for the category, not low-value directory spam
- Wrote genuinely local, non-templated service-area pages for each location — real neighbourhood references, real local context, LocalBusiness schema on each
- Set up a simple, ethical review-request workflow triggered at the natural point in the customer journey, instead of relying on customers to think of it unprompted
- Tracked map-pack position and profile actions (calls, direction requests, website clicks) weekly to catch regressions early and prove the trajectory
The outcome
- Moved into the map pack for the core 'near me' and service-plus-location searches that mattered most to the business
- Profile actions — calls and direction requests specifically — increased measurably as visibility improved
- Review velocity picked up meaningfully once the request workflow was in place, closing the gap with map-pack competitors
- Left the owner with a system they could actually keep running themselves — GBP posting habits, a review workflow, and clean citation data that doesn't need constant vendor management
The takeaway
Local SEO fails most often not from lack of effort but from lack of consistency — a profile touched once at setup and never again, citations that drift out of sync after a rebrand, reviews left to chance. The technical bar for local SEO is genuinely lower than most disciplines; the discipline bar is higher than most businesses expect.
